Why is lactose still a useful excipient in formulations?

Contrary to popular belief, it is not generally necessary to remove lactose from formulations. The quantities added are extremely small and have no impact on consumers. In pharmaceuticals, lactose is considered as a safe excipient, with limited negative interactions with drugs. A medicine, tablet or capsule, contains between 0,1 g to 0,2 g of lactose, i.e., around 63 times less than a 250 ml glass of milk that contains around 12.6 g of lactose.

To remind, lactose plays an essential technological role in OSD formulation:

•    Stability and homogeneity of formulations

•    Improved texture and solubility

•    Support for active ingredients

Further restricting lactose in drug formulations appears even less rational when considering its documented health benefits.
